Across the Barricades

‘Belfast really is a beautiful city. We’ve got all these parks: Dixon Park, Barnett Park, Clement Wilson Park, We’ve got the Botanic Gardens… we even have a rose festival every July… So if we’re not planting bombs, we’re planting flowers… It’s a very romantic city, believe me!’

Kevin McCoy, Across the Barricades.

On July the 14th and 15th Year 11 students of Ecclesfield School took Across the Barricades to the Crucible Studio as part of the Sheffield Children’s Festival. The play, by Joan Lingard and adapted by David Ian Neville, is set in Belfast and follows the relationship between Sadie Jackson, who is a Protestant and Kevin McCoy who is a Catholic. As the young couple grow closer together, their own family and friend’s beliefs begin to cause friction resulting in dramatic consequences for many characters in Across the Barricades.
